Thanks to my friends Liz Fenwick and Linda Wilgus, I get to begin my first-ever UK book tour at the lovely Falmouth Bookseller, in a part of the country that’s held my heart for fully 50 years. The proper name for our event is “Contemporary Cornish Writing”, featuring the three of us in conversation about Linda’s beautiful debut, The Sea Child, Liz’s newest novel, Flora’s Day, and the reiussue of my book The Rose Garden.

Continuing our joint mini-tour of Cornwall, Liz Fenwick and Linda Wilgus and I will be at Waterstones in Truro for “An Evening of Cornish Novels”, in which we’ll continue to chat about all things writerly whilst trying to put into words what it is about Cornwall that keeps us (and readers) enchanted.

Tea Leaves & Reads Bookshop
In-Person
Sunday, 26 April, 2026
Fairground Village Hall
Weyhill, Hampshire
6:00 p.m., GMT
Moving east, and leaving our friend Liz Fenwick at home in Cornwall this time, Linda Wilgus and I share our final event at the beautiful Tea Leaves & Reads in Weyhill, near Andover, Hampshire. Our event, called “Stories from Afar”, takes its theme from the fact that both Linda and I have lived in multiple locations in our lives, and so we bring what I like to call the “outsider’s eye” to our writing, which carries both challenges and advantages when telling stories.
Doors open at 5:00 p.m., and there will be refreshments and treats available from the T’s & C’s coffee van right outside. Tickets come in a variety of ticket-only or book-bundle options, and all the information you’re looking for is here at the bookshop’s event page. Please come out and join us!
Surrey International Writers’ Conference
In-Person & Virtual/Online
Thursday, October 22 – Sunday, October 25, 2026
This autumn, for the first time ever in their 32-year history, the organizers were forced to cancel the conference due to a labour dispute at the conference hotel. As you can imagine, this left them with some fairly crippling non-refundable costs (the airfare for all the presenters being only the beginning of it), so they’re now running an urgent GoFundMe in hopes of restoring some part of what was lost.
As most of you have heard me say before, SiWC is hands down my favourite writers’ conference, and the highlight of my working year, so I’m marking the dates here on my Events page for next year, because I’ll be there, no matter what, giving workshops, taking part in some panel discussions and moderating others, doing some blue-pencil critiques, trying to remember my lines at Michael Slade’s annual Shock Theatre, and filling every spare moment I can (when I’m not in the buffet line!) sitting in on the amazing range of sessions held by all the other writers who attend. I always come away from Surrey every year a little smarter and a whole lot more inspired to write. If you can only attend one writers’ conference, this is the one you should aim for.
Please donate to the GoFundMe if you can, even if it’s only a few dollars, and keep up to date on presenters and registration information in the meantime at the Conference’s website.
