Undertow & The Gemini Game
My first and second books, by order of publication (though first and third, by order of writing – I actually wrote Mariana before The Gemini Game), these two titles were published by Avalon Books in New York in 1993 and 1994, in small print-runs intended primarily for the American library market. As a result they’re both long out of print and difficult to find.
Please, please don’t pay the ridiculous prices I’ve seen these books go for on eBay. These are both quite short books (50,000 words) and, while I’m fond of them as early works, they’re honestly not up to the standard of my later and longer novels.
If you’re determined, you may still find a few copies lurking around in libraries or used book stores. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you :-).
Undertow Synopsis
Suffering from a severe case of writer’s block, mystery novelist Laura Callaghan agrees to look after her sister’s secluded beach house in Nova Scotia. There her only neighbours are long-time friend and artist, Ben Forrestall, and handsome Michael Sinclair who rents the small lighthouse nearby. Ben’s studio is on the second floor of the large colonial inn he used to own, and Laura finds out through his old photographs and a diary that the inn was built in the 1790s by a sea captain whose descendants were both fishermen and smugglers. This gives Laura inspiration to start working on a new novel, but when she realizes that Michael has a friend whose death was related to a current smuggling operation, she finds herself dangerously involved in more ways than one…
